Having a sister who lived for more than ten years on a coastal Maine island, so many things about the island and community in this book reminded me of what she described. I lived in remote towns on the other side of the continent, and there is clearly something different in the everyday dynamics of isolated areas that are global.
This thriller is a look at that personality of remote communities and alternates between the two detectives who travel to the island to solve the murder of an outsider reporter. Labuskes writing style gave the novel a dark, spooky feel that gave the impression of the island being in a dusky, haze all of the time.
My rating is 4 Stars: I really liked it! There were a couple of spots where the main character was a bit long on reflection. For reference my version of a 5 star review is “I absolutely loved it! It will stay with me for a long time and/or I would read it again in the future. Highly recommended.”
As a reviewer for NetGalley, I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. #BlackRockBay #NetGalley
